WHO WE ARE

The Amazing Care Charitable Foundation is a non-profit organization deemed by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) public charity, providing educational and low-cost counseling services related to care-giving, medication review, and clinical advice to patients and their families.

The Foundation seeks to promote informed decision-making to seniors and their families on a range of topics from care-giving to end-of-life care.  It supports networks of retired physicians (called Physician-friends-of-the-family) as well as clinical pharmacists who provide compassionate counseling to patients and their families.

Cora Tellez, the founder of The Amazing Care Foundation, experienced first-hand the challenge of care-giving to her husband with metastatic cancer.  Her experiences with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and social workers have informed her thinking about needed resources for people facing a medical crisis and their families.

Thank you to our individual, foundation and corporate supporters!

WHY IT MATTERS

The Foundation believes passionately that aging well is a function of access to good information, access to networks that can provide help when/as needed, and supporting one’s own network of family and friends who can give and receive care.

For me personally, it’s all about my kids.  I don’t want to be a burden to them and I want to know that in a very smart way I’m planning for my final years and that whatever those plans will be, it will make it a little easier on them.  That’s it.  That’s the essence of it.

Amazing Care was launched after my mother passed.  What would have been spectacular and would have really helped us at the time, and really will help people now, is the knowledge base…having the physician friend of the family network, to be able to ask those questions and help guide the journey.

One of the aspects of Amazing Care I like most is the retired medical consultants, the “Physician Friend of the Family” that Amazing Care has as a part of the program. Not everyone has that kind of resource.  I felt so blessed that I had it.  And that’s one of the things Amazing Care is going to provide for its members.  I love the physicians and professionals that come in and talk at the teas.  They are so informative.  That’s what people need when they don’t have a medical background…a consultant who is there for them.  That part is so important.

Carol R.

A unique thing about Amazing Care is how it helps prepare you, and encourages you to take the time to look and listen and learn about options. I know that it helped me when I had the opportunity to care for my father-in-law. I’ve been to enough Amazing Care tea times now that I think it’s made me a better person.

HOW WE HELP

The Amazing Care Foundation exists solely to make a positive difference in the lives of people who are undergoing the joys and indignities of aging as well as those who are providing care. Financial support to help with care-giving services for those with limited means.

The financial support is intended for short-term relief.

The Amazing Care Charitable Foundation has established an award to recognize the emotional and financial hardship associated with end-of-life care.  Funding is given to caregivers and others who support the patient and his/her family during a difficult time.  This award is made in memory of Grace Lucia who, regrettably, did not receive the kind of care our Foundation wishes she could have had.  In the words of her son, Bill Lucia, former President, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Healthcare Management Systems, here is Grace’s story:

“My mother passed away on September 9, 2014 at the age of 88, having been married to my father, William, for 69 years.  My mother was a strong, funny, hardworking woman who took care of everyone around her, friends or family.  Grace grew up in Philadelphia to parents who immigrated from Italy. They were poor so she had to quit high school in the 8th grade to help support the family.  Eventually, she met my father at a textile mill.  They lived in somewhat opposite neighborhoods in Philadelphia and he would take the trolley car an hour each way to see her.   They built a happy life together; my Dad was a factory floor manager at a textile mill and my mom cleaned doctor’s offices for 30 years or so.  They raised three kids, and experienced the grief of their eldest, my sister, dying before them.

Grace suffered from and survived cancer.  However, a few years later, she had a pretty devastating stroke.  This tough woman was now a shell of herself fighting to get better.  She was in a nursing home from the time she left the hospital until the time she passed.  Every week, my father would ask when is Mom coming home, and every week I had to explain that we would need to find a costly, yet qualified in-home caregiver.  My father doesn’t like a stranger in the home and was worried that he might do something wrong (not help her exercise her limbs, or with speech therapy or even eating).  But she always asked if she could die at home.

I arrived in Pennsylvania the evening before she passed away.  The home had set up a bed next to my Mom for my Dad, and he held her hand and slept next to her for the last time.  The next morning, my Dad, my niece Terri and I all held her hands and let her know she could slip away – we’d all be ok.  And within a few seconds of saying that, she let go.  She no longer needed to worry about everyone and take care of everyone – she knew my niece and I would now do that.

Six years later, my father still goes to a grief counseling group at church. He’s now 94 years old, active, and misses my mother every day.  What he tells me he missed the most during that period was not having her at home to comfort her.”

The best in human spirit often comes out in the context of care giving…Whenever I mention the idea to people they are always so happy to learn that there’s a network like this in existence.

…I think the Amazing Care Network can become the family that you choose to be a part of.  It becomes a support group, it becomes your friends, it becomes your extended family.

At the quarterly Teas, we listen to a speaker talk about a difficult topic…and then we have these amazing conversations afterwards, amongst ourselves.  I remember thinking after one talk, looking around the room and thinking, alright, here are these women who will talk to me about the tough stuff when the time comes. We’re talking about our own health, or my parent’s medical concerns or palliative care—words that weren’t even part of my vocabulary a year ago. If we can talk about these things, it’s not so frightening.

Amazing Care has helped me understand the dynamics of aging and caregiving. It has helped me have a sense of what to expect going forward. You can’t control aging, but you can control your attitude. Amazing Care helps educate me in terms of knowing what kinds of behaviors I need to either adapt or change or continue. Life is a full circle, Amazing Care is a social network that champions awareness.

I so look forward to the teas.  At one of them, I learned the difference between Hospice and Palliative Care.  That was such an interesting discussion.  There are always such great speakers, all topics that need to be discussed.  I’m personally planning more than I would have done in the past.  Not that I’m wanting to face the difficult issues of my coming years, but this is a good education for me.  I don’t really have family, I don’t have kids who will be taking care of me.  So, being part of the Amazing Care Network is going to be hugely helpful.  I don’t feel so much like I’m going it alone, and am making lasting friendships.

Please visit its website: www.amazingcarenetwork.com to learn more. Although we share the same name and leadership, ACN and the foundation are separate entities. ACN is owned by Sterling Health Services administration, a third party administrator founded by Cora in 2004.
